1. Join some social link building websites. These sites include, but are not limited to, Xomba, She Told Me and Redgage. She Told Me pays you a good amount of the advertising on their site. Redgage only pays a penny for every 10 views or so, but backlinks are backlinks. Xomba is probably the best site to join to build links. They pay 50% of the adsense earnings, and they generate a good amount of views.
2. Don't be greedy with your link building. You will want to build links to content that is not just your own. These sites work a lot like non-paying social linking sites like Stumbleupon. You can't just post links to your own work or your content will never be seen. They do this to keep you honest. Share the love, comment on others work, and post links to interesting stories, and you will make out ok.
3. Allow your website or articles to age a little before posting a ton of links. A brand new article with a ton of inbound links will look suspicious to Google. This may cause Google to blacklist you and all your link building efforts will go to waste.
4. Make sure that you grammar is good. If you have poor grammar, it is unlikely that someone will click on the link you provide.
